UK set to adopt speed limiters in all vehicles by 2022

The European commission approved safety measures to install intelligent speed assistance (ISA), advanced emergency braking and lane-keeping technology in all vehicles in an aim to reduce road deaths.

By 2022, it will be mandatory for all cars sold in Europe to be set with speed limiting technology

There are 25,000 deaths each year from human error on the road, the EU Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska hopes installing these new safety features in every car could ultimately cut road deaths to zero.

Cars installed with the ISA system receive information via GPS and a digital map telling the vehicle what the speed limit is. Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot-Citroen, Renault and Volvo already have models available with some of the ISA technology fitted. ISA technology makes every vehicle stop at a halt and tighten the seat belts when it senses a car is too near. This will reduce car crashes by human error by 40%.

The idea that cars will be fitted with this technology may upset many as many are happy to break limits when it suits them, however, this new technology does not force drivers to slow down. It encourages them and makes them aware of the limit, but it can be overridden. This is a feature you must active to use, much like cruise control.
