The Conservative 'Fact Check' Farce

Nearly seven million people tuned in last night to watch Conservative party leader Boris Johnson and Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn face each other in a live television debate, hosted by ITV's Julie Etchingham.

For the duration of the debate however, Twitter users noticed that the Conservative Headquarters own twitter account (@CCHQ) had changed their profile image, account handle and cover photo, rebranding themselves as 'factcheckUK'.

Many users of the social media site reacted angrily, accusing the Conservative party of deliberately misleading their followers. Other users pointed out that the Conservative party had broken Twitter rules by changing their name and images.

Twitter – which does not appear to have taken any measures over this incident – said it would act if the Conservatives attempted to “mislead” people again.
