The Irish political party Sinn Féin received a historical result in this year's general election. With an overall increase of 14 seats from the 2016 election, the party won a total of 37 seats, making them the second biggest party in Ireland.
Overall, they came only one seat behind Fianna Fáil with their 38 seats. The fragmented results will result in a hung parliament, with no party close to 80 seats, the number needed to establish stability in the government.
However, leader of the Sinn Féin party, Mary Lou McDonald was delighted with the results. Stating that this was a, “Revolution of the ballot box,” and that Sinn Féin had, “Won the popular vote.”
Now holding more power, Sinn Féin are making their move to reunify Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. An exit poll has shown that 57% of people support a referendum on unity, on both sides of the border.
