In a Move that Royal Mail has hailed “one of the biggest changes to the daily delivery since the launch of the post box in 1852”, a new pick up service has been introduced in which workers will pick up mail and parcels from people’s homes.
The change could come in as soon as Wednesday, with the move itself being fuelled after Royal Mail’s early business this year has shown it to be heading towards a 2020 loss, despite the spike of parcel deliveries this year. The modification by the major delivery service has also been linked to the gradual but predicted decline of letters, as well as extreme growth in the online shopping industry.
Successful trials have already been launched in the West of England with the introduced charge amounting to 72p charge plus postage costs, with pre-paid packages being collected for a slightly cheaper 60p. Customer will be able to make bookings via Royal Mail's new “Click and Drop” online service up to five days in advance, until midnight on the day before collection.
The recent system puts the Royal Mail in direct competition with the already inflated parcel collection market, which includes competitors such as DPD, Hermes and DHL.
