President of Bolivia steps down amid protests

Former Bolivia president, Evo Morales, has been offered Asylum in Mexico amid election fraud protests.

Morales resigned as Bolivia president after fourteen years in power but after suspicions of fraud in his re-election process last month, the head of the Bolivian Army called for his resignation.

Twenty people are believed to be injured in the protests, as Bolivia's military commander ordered troops to back up police who have clashed with Morales supporters.

Meanwhile, opposition protesters are celebrating his resignation in the streets of Bolivia’s administrative capital of La Paz.

Deputy head of the Senate, Jeanine Áñez, will take over as interim president until a new election is held.

Evo Morales says he is hurt to be leaving Bolivia but will return with “strength” and “energy”.
