Colombia took on hosts Ecuador for a decisive world cup qualifying match (at the Estadio de liga deportiva universitaria). The hosts hit six past Colombia; this was the first time that Colombia have conceded six goals since 1977. The hosts were winning the match 4-0 just before half-time, until James Rodriguez scored a consolation goal during the first half. This was followed up by Ecuador scoring another two goals to extend their lead. Within the final 10 minutes Gonzalo Plata was sent off as he received two yellow cards. This match leaves Colombia in a difficult position as they currently sit at 7thplace.

Moreover, Brazil took on hosts Uruguay Arthur Melo opened the score at the 34thminute, this was followed up with Richarlison’s strike just before half-time. In the second half Edinson Cavani was sent off with a straight red card at the 71stminute.

The last match of the day in the south American world cup qualifiers was Venezuela vs chile. The match took place at the Estadio Olimpico de la UCV. Chile went 1-0 down within the first 9 minutes. Arturo Vidal equalised to make the score 1-1 six minutes later. As the match was about to finish as a draw Salomon Rondon scored to give Venezuela the win.
