55 local councils throughout England have been asking LGBT+ youth who have been forced to leave home to show letters from their parents as proof of homelessness.
Many of the youth have claimed that they have been unable to obtain the letters, as their parents won't contact them due to homophobia or disapproval of their gender identity. However, without the letter councils have labelled each individual as, 'intentionally homeless'.
Leading charities have said that this is intentionally putting the LGBT+ youth at risk, as it implies they have had a choice in their situation. Almost 25% of all homeless people under the age of 25 identify as LGBT+, with many stating familial issues as the reason for their homelessness, according to the Albert Kennedy Trust.
