On the 22nd October, 322 MPs in the house of commons voted against free school meals. The free school meals scheme funded schools within England to provide every child in reception, year 1 and year 2 with a meal at lunchtime, and also helped to save families money. The UK government extended free school meals to eligible children during the Easter holidays, but the government has refused to do so again over the Christmas period.
Councils across West London have jumped in to help those children who may go hungry this October half term. Local councils Ealing and Hounslow, and Conservative council Hillingdon, are already stepping up to ensure that eligible children can receive food this October.
Hounslow education chief expressed how devastated he was when he found out MPs voted against the free school meals schemes. He said; “It was incredibly disappointing that the government chose not to support children and young people who may be going hungry this half-term.”
It is believed around 8,500 children in Hounslow are eligible for free school meals. Vouchers with a value of £15 are provided to those families who need support during this challenging time.
If you are eligible for this scheme, please contact your local council for more information.
